How to use Disposable Tourniquet

2023-10-13

Here are the general steps for using a disposable tourniquet:

  1. Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water or use hand sanitizer before handling the tourniquet.

  2. Select the appropriate size tourniquet for the patient's limb. The tourniquet should be long enough to wrap around the limb with some overlap, but not too tight that it causes discomfort.

  3. Place the tourniquet around the limb, just above the site where you need to restrict blood flow.

  4. Pull the free end of the tourniquet tight and fasten it securely to the clip or Velcro closure.

  5. Tighten the tourniquet until you feel the radial pulse disappear. This indicates that you have successfully restricted blood flow to the area.

  6. Mark the time the tourniquet was applied, as it should not be left in place for more than 1 hour to avoid tissue damage.

  7. Release the tourniquet after completing the desired procedure, by gently loosening the strap and removing it from the limb.

  8. Observe the limb for any signs of tissue damage, such as numbness, tingling, or changes in color, and report any concerns to a healthcare professional.

Note: It is important to use disposable tourniquets for each patient to prevent the spread of infections. Additionally, it is crucial to follow the manufacturer's instructions and dispose of the tourniquet properly after use.
